Is Your Cat Polydactyl?

What IS “Polydactyl?”  Simply stated, it means having extra toes.  The average cat has five toes on its front paws and four toes on its back paws.  Anything more than that makes it polydactyl.

The most famous polydactyl cat may be Princess Six Toes, who was owned by Ernest Hemingway.  Because of this, cats with extra toes are sometimes called “Hemingway Cats.”  The Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West, Florida, is home to about 60 cats, many of whom are descended from Princess Six Toes.  About half of them are polydactyl.

According to the Guinness Book Of World Records, the world record for the cat with the most toes goes to Jake, of Bonfield, Ontario, Canada.  Jake has a total of 28 toes – seven on each paw.  Watch out, mice!

Keep Your Pets Warm and Cozy This Winter

Cooler weather is upon us, and many of us will be dialing down our thermostats to save money.  Just because our furry friends are....well....furry,   doesn't mean they don't feel the cold!  Animals, like people, like to be cozy and warm, too!

With a little thought, you can keep your pet comfortable through the winter months.  and even have fun doing it!
Imagine walking your dog in his brand new snow boots and Adirondack jacket.  There are choices out there for the most macho Rottweiler or the tiniest teacup Yorkie.

When you're back at home, grab your own sweater and a cup of hot chocolate.  For a special treat after some time outside, try warming your pet's food.  Not too hot - just a lukewarm meal will be enough to help her shake off the chill.

After dinner, your dog or cat can cuddle up, either with you or in a                            There's an amazing variety of ways to cozy up his favorite spot.  There are electric                        that use as little as 4 watts of electricity - less than some night lights!  Or pop a special pad into the microwave and keep his bed warm and toasty for up to 12 hours with no plug at all.

If a new bed is in order, take a look at one of the "cave style" pet beds.  They're warm, fuzzy, and cave shaped so your pet can burrow in and stay warm, even when you set your thermostat low enough to save some serious dollars. Add a bed warmer, and they'll be happy as bears!  (Hmmmm, I wonder if they come in human size???)
are ideal if your pet must spend extended time outside.  If the electric type isn't possible, try a thermal pad designed to reflect your pet's own body heat.  While it's not a good idea to dress your pet in coat and boots if he's outdoors unattended, you can get special cream for his feet to prevent buildup of ice and snow in his pads.  Don't forget to allow plenty of room to move around, just as you warm up outdoors by moving around, your pet needs to do the same.

Making sure your pet has enough water is especially important in cold weather.  Dehydration makes pets even more susceptible to cold, so check water supplies often.  If you have an outdoor bowl, make sure it's not freezing over, or use a                     to prevent freezing.  This is important even if your dog or cat is in the garage, as temperatures there can drop lower than you think.

So let the wind howl!  With a little planning, our pets can stay warm and cozy, and we can save money, too!
If your pets (brrrrrrrrr) absolutely must (or want to) spend time outside, make sure they have someplace warm to escape the wind and cold.  You can insulate a dog house by piling hay bales around it.  Nailing a piece of heavy blanket over the entryway makes an instant door.  There are electric heated mats made for outdoor use, and these
What is your cat or dog's favorite way to keep warm?
Do you have a story or photos of your pet to share with our readers?  Is a romp in the snow a wild party to your furry friends, or do they prefer to curl up in the warmest spot in the house until it's all over?  We'd love to see them all dressed up in their sweaters and boots, or just cuddling up on their favorite blanket.  We'll publish the best picture or story you send in - right after the first snowstorm of the season. (In southeast Michigan - it's sure to happen soon!)

Is It A Three Dog Night?
Do you know where this expression got its start?  Although its origination may be either Eskimo or Australian, the meaning is the same.  On a three dog night, you would need to cuddle up to three dogs in order to keep warm!  I recommend big dogs for this purpose!  Three chihuahuas might not do the job!
